Air Quality Awareness Week 2024

May 6, 2024

Background

Every May, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency hosts Air Quality Awareness Week. AQAW 2024 will be celebrated from May 6-10.

As part of the celebrations, AirQo is partnering with U.S Missions across major cities in Africa, the Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT-Uganda), the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA-Uganda), and  Kampala Capital City Authority, (KCCA) as well as regional cities across Africa – Lagos, Nairobi, and Kisumu, Yaounde, Accra, Bujumbura,  – to raise awareness about air pollution in Africa.

The theme for this year is, “Knowing Your Air”. It is an opportunity to raise awareness of available tools and resources to access air quality data. By knowing your air, you can take control and make informed decisions about your daily activities. This may involve planning outdoor exercise around cleaner air hours or taking precautions during high pollution days.

Objectives

  • Raise awareness of available tools and resources: We aim to create widespread awareness of the readily available tools and resources that allow individuals to access real-time air quality data across major African cities. You can download the AirQo App to know your air.
  • Empower individuals, strengthen partnerships, and drive collective action toward achieving cleaner, healthier air for all. Together, we can make a positive difference in protecting our environment and improving public health outcomes.
  • Bridge the gap between Policy and Action: We believe a collaborative approach is crucial, we aim to enhance synergy between policymakers and the private sector whilst facilitating the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and resources to address air quality challenges comprehensively and effectively.

We have tailored the EPA Air Quality Awareness Week 2024 topics to align with the African perspective.

  • Monday, May 6th  – Waste Management
  • Tuesday, May 7th  – Asthma and Your Health
  • Wednesday, May 8th – Air Quality and Transportation
  • Thursday, May 9th  – Air Quality and Climate
  • Friday, May 10th   – Participatory Science
