The Air We Breathe – Finding the Link Between Spatial & Health Justice

March 19, 2024

Air remains one of the last bastians of the commons. A universally accessible and free resource that, quite literally, sustains life. However, as with all natural materials, access to clean air, air that is free from pollution and toxic waste, is unequal. The effects of air pollution often falls most heavily on the spatially marginalised – most often those living in disaster zones, informal settlements and low-quality housing stock adjacent to heavy industry. The World Health Organization estimates that around 7 million people die every year from the effects of air pollution.

This session will break down the drivers of air pollution in informal settlements and take a critical view of the effectiveness of nature-based solutions in overcoming them, drawing on the expertise of a panel of researchers & practitioners.
