AfriCAN Peer Editing Initiative

Forum 2025 Networking Conversation

Goal

The AfriCAN Peer Editing Initiative provides manuscript editing assistance to researchers with an institutional affiliation in Africa who plan to submit a manuscript for publication. This initiative is offered free of cost.

What does the process entail?

As part of peer editing, authors will receive feedback on the format of the manuscript, presentation of data and/or brevity and style. The peer editors will not conduct a technical review of the manuscript or check the accuracy and completeness for the references.

Author eligibility

  • Primary affiliation of the first author must be in Africa.

Important Information for Authors

  • You do not have to be a partner of the Africa Clean Air Network to participate in the peer editing program.
  • Participation in the program is not a guarantee for publication. Any submissions made to journals will be subject to their peer review processes.
  • If accepted for publication, we request that authors acknowledge the AfriCAN Peer Editing Initiative in the acknowledgements section.

Process and timeline

The manuscript should be submitted as either an MS Word document or an MS Word-compatible document editor (e.g., Google Docs) and must follow editorial guidelines from intended journals. Please review the author guidelines forbefore submission of the manuscript to AfriCAN. Submissions must be sent to submissions@cleanairafrica.org with a subject line: CAJ Special Issue Manuscript.

Deadlines: submissions for peer editing are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Peer Editors

Peer editors will provide feedback on the following aspects of the manuscript:

  • Format, inclusion of relevant content under each header, i.e., is sufficient and relevant information included in each section of the manuscript?
  • Language and brevity (as needed)
  • Data presentation and visualization
  • Content specific feedback (as appropriate)

The position is voluntary.  We expect peer editors to spend between 3-6 hours for each manuscript.

Eligibility

  • PhD in Air Quality, Environmental Health, or related topics.
  • Demonstrable publication track record with at least two peer-reviewed publications in air quality.

"Innovation for clean air thrives on collaboration. At AirGradient, we champion this with open-source technology. We're excited to give five outdoor air quality monitors to the Nairobi poster competition winners, providing tools for local capacity building and enabling more air quality data in the region."
Achim Haug, CEO and founder of AirGradient
"Local data creates urgency with local governments to act in addition to ensuring targeted interventions meet the community needs."
Dorothy Lsoto, PhD Candidate, University of Wisconsin-Madison
"Kisumu has installed 15 air quality monitors in partnership with AirQo. We are using this data to inform urban planning, such as where to place green buffers, and enforce industrial compliance. It has also empowered us to start meaningful public education campaigns, targeting schools, transport operators, and local businesses."
H.E Dr Mathew Ochieng Owili, Deputy Governor, Kisumu City County, Kenya
